EIGHT-time Ballon d'Or winner, Lionel Messi has withdrawn himself from the squad ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers fixtures.

Messi will play no part in meetings with arch-rivals, Uruguay and Brazil as the Albiceleste have confirmed that their captain is suffering from a “discomfort in his adductor region”.

It appears that his absence is caused by a muscle complaint that was picked up in an MLS clash with Atlanta United – a game that saw Messi register another stunning solo goal.

“I'm sad to miss these important games against Uruguay and Brazil with the national team. I really wanted to play but a small injury means I need to rest for a bit, so I can't be there. I'll be supporting and cheering from here like any other fan. Let's go, Argentina!” the 37-year-old said on social media.

Despite the player's absence, Argentina will be aiming for a win as they intend to pick up the qualification ticket early as they are five points clear at the top of the South American World Cup qualification table.

The 2026 World Cup will be hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico next summer.
