THE AFCON competition is set to kick of on the 9th of January 2022 in Cameroon with the host facing off Burkina Faso by 5pm. This will be the 33rd edition of the tournament.

Remarkably, there are some African football legends who have participated in the tournament and you must have thought "oh! He must have won this trophy" but have actually never won it.

#1 Didier Drogba

The former Chelsea player was one of the most successful African players in England winning the league, the champions league and other domestic cups. But, no, he never lifted the AFCON trophy.

Although he was the tournaments top scorer in 2012, he never got his hands on the trophy and eventually retired before Ivory coast won it in Equatorial Guinea in 2015.

 #2 Nwankwo Kanu

Our very own Papilo won the Champions League, the UEFA Cup, the English Premier League, and an Olympic gold, but not the AFCON.

He did well representing the Super Eagles at three World Cups, but could only reach the Semi Finals of the AFCON tournament 5 times.

#3 - George Weah

Despite remaining the only African player to win the Ballon d'Or, he wasnt able to lay his hands on the prestigious African trophy too.

George Weah, who now happens to Liberia's president, could only help the Lone Stars to reach the Nations Cup on two occasions but could not secure gold.
