Akinsanya urges Igando-Ikotun residents to cultivate habit of tree planting

THE Executive Chairman of the Igando-Ikotun LCDA, Comrade Akinsanya Lasisi Ayinde, on Sunday, July 14, 2024, joined others in Lagos State to celebrate the Year 2024 tree planting and sensitisation campaign day.

While speaking during the Year 2024 tree planting exercise tagged "Nurture Our Future," which took place at  Agric road in the Egan area of the council, the council helmsman called on Lagos residents to cultivate the habit of tree planting in their communities.176l

Akinsanya said that the tree planting initiative aims not only to improve the aesthetic appeal of the area but will also contribute to the overall environmental health and well-being of the community and society at large.

According to him, the wrongdoings in the environment have become worrisome issues and the Local Government is getting increasingly concerned.

“It has, therefore, become expedient that everyone must join the current face of environmental regeneration. Please, join the crusade to sustain a healthy environment for future generations by beautifying and enhancing the aesthetics of your tenements and the environment.177k

“Residents should clear tertiary drains in front of their tenements and desist from dumping refuse into the drainage channels and water bodies. They should desist from the indiscriminate burning of refuse and plant trees at every given opportunity,” he said.

Akinsanya said the Government is committed to the green campaign, hence people should continue to embrace its noble objectives.

He then encouraged the planting of trees in the community and discouraged the cutting down of trees, as well as the dumping of refuse in the drainage, stating that planting trees provides aesthetics and a beautiful environment in society.

On his part, HRM Alakesan of Akesan, Oba Nojeem Abidemi Aberejo Ogunjobi Oduala I, advised all residents to protect and nurture the planted trees to maturity, adding that “trees are beneficial to the existence of man, animals, and the environment. When a tree is cut down, it should be replaced by five trees to avoid deforestation.”178i

In his speech, the Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Hon. Tokunbo Wahab, who was represented by Mrs Rouqouyat Famuyiwa, emphasised the importance of tree planting.

The event saw the active participation of community and political leaders, Government officials, volunteers, and environmental enthusiasts who came together to make a positive impact on the environment.

Present at the event were the Executive Vice-Chairman, Hon. Mrs Mojisola Badmus, Deputy Leader of the Legislative Council, Hon. Olayinka Wahab, SLG, Comr.
