Super Eagles of Nigeria fall to Wasp of Rwanda

THE Super Eagles of Nigeria couldn’t end their AFCON qualifiers fixture on a high note as they lost 2-1 to the Amavubi of Rwanda at Uyo on Monday.

The match took a sudden turn in the second half after a goalless first half, Samuel Chukwueze gave the Eagles the lead in the 59th minute but Rwanda equalised in the 72nd minute and found a winner three minutes later.

Interim manager, Eguavoen was not happy with the performance as he intended to win the game against Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

“Below standard, I feel very sad right now. It was not what we planned for,” Eguavoen said in a post-match interview.

“We scored and then against the run of play we conceded, and I tried to change formation, but it didn’t work.

“We conceded a second goal, we changed the game formation, brought in two strikers, and it just didn’t work.

“Football is about winning, losing or drawing. I think we have a strong squad but it just didn’t happen for us today. But I still very much believe in this team,” he added.

Despite the loss, the Super Eagles qualified for the 2025 AFCON tournament at the top of their group and will now have their attention aimed at qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
