Skill acquisition is as important as getting a degree, student entrepreneur reveals

THE CEO of DK Barbershop, Samson Moses Olamide disclosed that 'skills acquisition is as important as getting a degree' during an interview with AlimoshoToday recently.

While talking about his journey into entrepreneurship, the 200 level student of the Lagos State university said: 

“I started learning in 2007. My grandma forced me to learn the vocation towards the end of my primary education because I am usually idle after school hours. But gradually, I started developing passion for the vocation and then started to pay attention in shop”.

Regarding how he has been coping with both academic and business without one affecting or distracting the other, Moses told AlimoshoToday that “it has not been easy combining both activities. Many times, I had to burn candles at night to read for school exams or test because I would have been very busy all day. But with God and determination, I am doing well. I believe determination is very key to achieving one goals”.

He also revealed that his business has really grown bigger over time and has been fruitful and productive ever since. “It’s been a source of financial sustainability”, he said.  

Sharing his goal as a student business owner with AlimoshoToday, Moses said his ultimate goal is to be successful in his field. If he later secures a job in the industry after graduating from school and doesn’t work as a barber anymore, he will still give back to the society. He intends to open a big barbershop where the young ones can be trained and groomed for free to become independent and make ends meet.   

The student entrepreneur ended the interview with a word of advice to his fellow students. He implored them to endeavour to acquire skills while they are still in school because skill acquisition is as important as getting a degree.

"Your potential employers are not concerned about your degree. They are most likely after the skills you’ve got - what you can bring to the table. Your skill is your ID card, your selling point and the key that will open the door of opportunities for you. It is what will sell you in the labour market", he concluded.
