Funke Akindele reveals how she started taking roles in Yoruba movies

Speaking to Arise TV news, the 46-year-old revealed that she had struggles landing an English role job and was getting frustrated till she met actress and film director, Ayo Adesanya.

AWARD-winning Nigeria actress, Funke Akindele has revealed how frustration made her let go of looking for English movie roles and switched to Yoruba movie roles.

Speaking to Arise TV news, the 46-year-old revealed that she had struggles landing an English role job and was getting frustrated till she met actress and film director, Ayo Adesanya.

According to her, it was Ayo Adesanya who introduced her to roles in Yoruba movies and also made her meet industry gurus such as Fathia Balogun, Iyabo Ojo, Yinka Quadri, and Taiwo Hassan.

“When I didn’t get roles in English I got frustrated. So I was on a project with Ayo Adesanya, and I told her that I don’t have roles and she said, ‘I’ll talk to a producer, and I will have you on board for Yoruba movies.’ And she spoke to the producer and I was invited to come and act in Osogbo then.

“From there, I met with Fathia Balogun. I met Iyabo Ojo and I told them I need roles and Iyabo said, ‘Okay, come come.’ She took me to the Odun Fakoko where you have the Yinka Quadri and Taiwo Hassan. She said, ‘This is my friend. Give her a job," Akindele said.

Funke Akindele, who was the running mate to People's Democratic Party gubernatorial candidate, Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, for the 2023 Lagos state governorship election has won numerous awards and produced and directed various English and Yoruba movies.
