Mr Akindele Bello, a commercial driver of the popular minibus (Korope) who spoke with Alimosho Today in pidgin English, said: "It wasn't funny at all because it had rained the previous day and a small portion of water, which had gathered just before the area where the truck had broken down, gave most of us the impression that it was fuel spillage."

The truck, which occupied 50 per cent of the road, led to heavy gridlock which affected both lanes of the Egbeda Road this morning, a LASTMA report confirmed.

Another motorist, Mr Peter Ekene, said: "The truck was moving slowly and we were behind it, thinking traffic had built up in front of it, until we saw people running away, raising false alarm.  It was just a breakdown."

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has been contacted for evacuation, LASTMA said.
