FOLLOWING a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro24 final, Gareth Southgate has announced his resignation as the England national team Manager.
The 53-year-old took charge of the senior men's team eight years ago when he stepped up from managing the U21 team to take over, following Sam Allardyce’s sudden exit in September 2016.
With 102 games in charge, Southgate became the first Manager of the England men’s team to reach two finals and the first to reach a final outside of England.
Announcing his resignation, Southgate said: “As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England.
“It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it’s time for change and for a new chapter. I’m leaving my role.”
During his time in charge, Southgate guided England to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the quarter-finals of the 2022 World Cup and also led the team to the final of Euro 2020 and Euro 2024.
