FORMER Barcelona midfielder, Andres Iniesta has officially retired from professional football on Tuesday at an event in Barcelona.

Regarded as one of the best midfielders to ever play for Barcelona, Iniesta has received widespread love and wishes from his former teammates and coaches, following the news of his retirement.

Surprisingly, Barcelona's rival, Real Madrid paid tribute to the legendary Spanish midfielder, appreciating him for his contribution to football and his excellent character in and out of the game.

“Andrés Iniesta has enriched the sport through his football and his values, in addition to the numerous trophies he has won during his career,” part of the statement read, marking a rare moment of solidarity between the historic rivals.

Former teammate, Lionel Messi also expressed admiration for the player as he wrote “One of the teammates with the most magic and the ones I enjoyed playing together the most. Andres Iniesta, the ball is going to miss you and so are all of us. I wish you the best always, you are a phenomenon.”

Iniesta won many trophies and awards during his football days but one that stands out is the unforgettable goal in the 2010 World Cup final, which secured Spain’s first-ever title.
