FORMER Nigeria international, Emmanuel Amuneke has backed Atalanta forward, Ademola Lookman to win the CAF Player of the Year award.

Lookman no doubt has experienced a good season, helping Nigeria reach the finals of the 2023 AFCON tournament, as well as winning the Europa League title for Atalanta scoring a hattrick in the finals.

Amuneke, who won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and won African Footballer of the Year in the same year, believes Lookman is the perfect player to take home the prestigious award.

“He's in line, if he continues the way he is doing. I watched the last game against Rwanda, and his performance was outstanding. It shows that he has been able to consolidate himself with African football," Amuneke told SportsBoom.

“When I won it, I think Ikpeba won it again, and then Kanu. If a Nigerian wins it next, it is definitely a joyous one. It's a thing of great motivation that shows the future is bright for our young players," he added.

Nigeria and Galatasaray striker, Victor Osimhen is the reigning African Player of the Year, which means if Looman wins the award, it would be two consecutive Nigerian players winning the award.
