The Federal Government, on Monday, declared Wednesday and Thursday as a public holiday to celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitri.
Residents in preparation for the Eid-ul-Fitri expressed discomfort and high cost of foodstuffs to our reporter who was at the Ikotun Igando market.
One Mrs. Olajumoke Stella called on the state and federal government to urgently address the situation before things get out of hand.
"Some of us might not even celebrate. Things are expensive, We can't even host a full family anymore. Where is the money?" She said.
Other market women spoken to also shared their grievances, attributing the high increase in the prices of foodstuffs to effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, while others, attributed the trend to increase in transport fares caused by the recent increase in petrol price and the inability of farmers to produce enough food for domestic consumption while the nation’s borders remain shut.
Some of the major foodstuffs affected by the price hike, as confirmed by our reporter, include rice, beans, tomato, pepper, palm oil and yam.
