THE Executive Chairman of the Igando-Ikotun LCDA, Comrade Akinsanya Lasisi Ayinde has encouraged residents of the council area to observe proper hygiene in a bid to curb the cholera disease.

Note that cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, infecting people most often via contaminated water or food ingestion.

A statement signed by the council Boss read: “Protecting yourselves from cholera involves several key practices, particularly if you are in an area where cholera is prevalent. Here are some essential steps:

1. Drink Safe Water
   - Boil your water for at least one minute before drinking.
   - Use bottled water or water treated with chlorine or iodine tablets.
   - Avoid ice unless it's made from safe water.9888

2. Practice Good Hygiene
   - Wash hands frequently with soap and clean water, especially after using the bathroom and before handling food.
   - Use alcohol-based hand sanitisers if soap and water are not available.

3. Eat Safe Food
   - Eat food that is thoroughly cooked and served hot.
   - Avoid raw or undercooked seafood.
   - Peel fruits and vegetables yourself; avoid those that can't be peeled.

4. Proper Sanitation
   - Use latrines or bury faeces; avoid defecating in any body of water.
   - Dispose of diapers and faecal matter safely.9890

5. Cholera Vaccination
   - Consider getting vaccinated if you are travelling to or living in an area with active cholera transmission.

6. Avoid Risky Behaviours
   - Avoid swimming in or consuming water from rivers, lakes, or other untreated sources.”

Comrade Akinsanya then urged residents to observe proper hygiene and adhere to these guidelines, to significantly reduce the risk of contracting cholera.
