Residents decry poor drainage, bad roads as flood ravages Akowonjo communities

THE September rains have continued to submerge streets, eat up roads and distress residents due to poor drainages, bad roads, and indiscriminate disposal of waste by some locals, AlimoshoToday has investigated.

On September 9, the heavy downpour had flooded nearly the entire Akowonjo Road, rushing into houses with autos left to swim helplessly as residents scampered to rescue selves and their belongings. The same thing happened on Ogunlana Street which links Bammeke on the left and Akowonjo on the right. Another area, Jayeioba Road in Shasha inwards Orisumbare, linking Idimu had the same challenge.

A resident of Alimosho on Ogunlana Street, Mr Kelvin,  spoke with Alimosho Today saying, "Today's rain  was really terrible. It filled up everywhere, covering the gutter. If you don't live here, you won't know there's a gutter."

"The flood", he continued "was carrying all sorts of rubbish from other streets, down to this place.

Mr Kelvin appealed to the government to come to their aid as unsuspecting passers-by and commercial motorcyclists often fall inside the gutter and suffer severe injuries.

Another resident of Alimosho, who lives in Shasha and identifies himself as Busayomi, appealed to the government to fix the road and drainage as the rain causes so much havoc.

Busayomi said: "Government should remember Shasha, Jaiyeoba towards Orisunbare Road in Akowonjo area of Alimosho. The road is still in a bad shape, especially this rainy season."

A shop owner on Akowonjo Road, Mr Francis Udemba, said: "This place is a no-go area when the rain starts. All the gutters are blocked, so the water just fills everywhere. We are already fed up with the situation."

"Government needs to come and help up urgently," he pleaded.
