5 DIY natural hair masks using local ingredients

CARING for natural hair can be rewarding and challenging, especially with the effects of Nigeria’s climate—think humidity, heat, and the harsh Harmattan season. While there are countless store-bought products available, sometimes the best treatments come straight from your kitchen. Using affordable, easily accessible local ingredients, you can create nourishing DIY hair masks that strengthen, moisturise, and revitalise your natural hair.

1. AVOCADO AND HONEY MOISTURE BOOST
If your hair feels dry or brittle, this deeply moisturising mask is perfect for you. Avocado is packed with healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals that soften hair, while honey works as a humectant, drawing moisture into your strands.
INGREDIENTS:
1 ripe avocado
2 tablespoons of honey
1 tablespoon of coconut oil (optional)
Mash the avocado until smooth, then mix in the honey and coconut oil. Apply the mixture to damp hair from roots to ends, cover it with a shower cap, and let it sit for 30–45 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and follow with your regular shampoo and conditioner.
BENEFITS: Leaves hair soft, shiny, and deeply hydrated.

2. ALOE VERA AND OLIVE OIL REPAIR MASK
Aloe vera is known for its soothing and healing properties, making it great for dry, itchy scalps and damaged hair. Olive oil adds extra nourishment and shine.
INGREDIENTS:
Fresh aloe vera gel (scooped from the leaf)
2 tablespoons of olive oil
Blend the aloe vera gel until smooth, then mix it with olive oil. Apply the mixture directly to your scalp and hair. Leave it on for about 30 minutes before rinsing off with warm water.
BENEFITS: Strengthens hair, soothes an itchy scalp, and promotes hair growth.

3. BANANA AND COCONUT MILK STRENGTHENING MASK
Bananas are rich in potassium and vitamins that help strengthen hair and prevent breakage. Combined with creamy coconut milk, this mask nourishes and fortifies hair from within.
INGREDIENTS:
1 ripe banana
Half a cup of coconut milk
Blend the banana until completely smooth (to avoid chunks in your hair) and mix it with coconut milk. Apply evenly across your hair, focusing on the ends. Let it sit for 20–30 minutes before rinsing thoroughly.
BENEFITS: Strengthens hair strands and prevents split ends.

4. EGG AND SHEA BUTTER PROTEIN TREATMENT
Eggs are rich in protein, which helps repair weak or damaged hair. Shea butter, a staple in many Nigerian homes, provides intense moisture and seals the hair cuticle.
INGREDIENTS:
1 egg
2 tablespoons of shea butter
1 tablespoon of olive oil
Melt the shea butter slightly (if solid) and mix it with the beaten egg and olive oil. Apply to your hair, cover with a plastic cap, and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse out with cool water (to prevent the egg from cooking in your hair) and shampoo as usual.
BENEFITS: Restores protein, improves hair elasticity, and adds shine.

5. HIBISCUS AND YOGHURT GROWTH MASK
Hibiscus, also known as zobo in Nigeria, is packed with nutrients that stimulate hair growth and prevent thinning. Yoghurt adds protein and softens the hair.
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup of hibiscus petals (fresh or dried)
Half a cup of plain yoghurt
Blend the hibiscus petals into a paste and mix with yoghurt. Apply the mixture to your scalp and hair, let it sit for 30 minutes, and rinse thoroughly.
BENEFITS: Promotes healthy hair growth, reduces hair fall, and enhances shine.

Embracing your natural hair journey doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. With these DIY hair masks made from affordable, local ingredients, you can give your hair the love and nourishment it deserves.
