The Executive Chairman of Somolu Local Government, Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu, on Saturday gave food packages to over 3,000 elderly people of 60 years and above, who are resident within Somolu. This comes on a monthly basis and Somolu Community really appreciates it.
The Chief Press Secretary of Shomolu Local Government Area of Lagos, Oseni Owolabi Ajimomuya, disclosed this in a statement.
While addressing the large crowd of elderly people who were in their face masks in compliance with the COVID-19 preventive guidelines, the Executive Chairman said the programme is as old as his administration, which started in July 2017.
He expressed his appreciation to the elderly people for their prayers and support, which he is always pleased with, promising not to relent on the monthly welfare package for the senior citizens in Somolu that is usually for 1,500 beneficiaries.
The Council's helmsman was joined by the Lagos State House of Assembly member representing Somolu Constituency 1, Hon. Rotimi Emmanuel Olowo, who appreciated the gestures of the Executive Chairman towards the elderly people in Somolu.
Apart from the package of food which consisted of garri, rice and beans; each of the beneficiaries also received cash gifts meant for them to purchase the required ingredients to garnish the food items, courtesy of the duo of Hon Abdul Hamed, a.k.a., Dullar and Hon. Olowo.
In his opening remarks, Hon. Abdul Hamed Salawu, who was with his amiable wife, Mrs. Florence Salawu, said he has been enjoying the support of his political leaders in Somolu, especially from his party, the ruling All Progressives Congress.
He urged the people present at the Banquet Hall to observe a minute silence for his deceased political leaders, late Senator Adebayo Sikirukahi Osinowo and Chief Sikirukahi Asenuga.
He also urged the elderly people to never stop admonishing their children against destruction of public and private facilities in the name of protests, as it is the public who suffers the damage eventually.
He admonished residents to keep supporting and cooperating with the Government in the delivery of the dividends of democracy to the populace.
Fielding questions from reporters, Hon. Salawu said the programme was dedicated to the elderly people and series of trainings and empowerment programmes for the youths in Somolu would be coming up in a few weeks time.
According to him, youths would have the opportunity to choose training programmes according to their passions and interests.
People living with disabilities, widows, CDC/CDAs, artisans, religious leaders and vulnerable people in the community also benefited from the package as their mouths were full of praises and faces filled with joy from the food items and cash gifts.
