A 30-year-old bus driver, Victor Bassey, was on Wednesday arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for allegedly assaulting a passenger, Uche Sebastine.
Bassey was alleged to have used a broken bottle to stab the passenger.
The defendant, who was arraigned on a two-count charge of assault and manner likely to cause a breach of peace, denied committing the offence.
However, the prosecutor, Sergent Urobosa, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on July 14, at Costain bus stop, Iganmu.
He also alleged that Bassey used a broken bottle to rip open the hand of the complainant, Sebastine, who is presently at the Lagos State Teaching Hospital (LUTH), lying critically ill.
According to him: “Bassey had refused to give Sebastine his N200 balance after the end of his trip and the duo had gotten into a fight, in the process, the defendant broke a bottle and stabbed the complainant on his right hand.”
The Magistrate, Mrs Folarin-Williams, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties each in like sum and adjourned the case to August 12 for mention.
