Tems used to get bullied because of her voice

TEMILADE Openiyi, known professionally as Tems, has recalled how she was bullied when she was young because of her voice.

The Grammy Award winner revealed that she was bullied to the point that she started crying because her voice was as high-pitched as a boy's own.

Tems, in an interview with The Cut, said: “I was bullied to the point of tears and was a target of ridicule. This led to the belief that I sounded like a boy or a frog, with the impression that my voice was ugly.

“I was always in my own little world. When I did make friends, I would try to make them sing my songs and other girls had these sweet, high voices and my voice had a bass.”

The 28-year-old has been able to overcome the taunting as she is now one of Africa's biggest female artists with a Best Melodic Rap Performance Grammy award to show for it.
