“A Tribe Called Judah” makes movie history

FUNKE Akindele's hit movie “A Tribe Called Judah” has made it to the book of movie history, becoming the first Nollywood movie to surpass N1 billion at the box office.

The movie, which, according to the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN), finished 2023 with a total gross of ₦854.3 million, has now hit a billion naira at the box office.

This was made known by Moses Babatope, the Group Deputy Managing Director of FilmHouse Group, who said: “Funke Akindele's A Tribe Called Judah reaching the one billion naira mark is an indication that despite the stiff competition from international streaming platforms, our local content continues to thrive, engaging audiences on a grand scale.”

FilmHouse Group CEO, Kene Okwuosa also said in a statement: “Akindele’s film has not only captivated audiences but has also proven the resilience of Nigerian cinema in the face of global streaming giants like Netflix and Prime Video.”

A Tribe Called Judah became the first Nollywood movie to gross over N113 million in its opening weekend after it was released on December 15, 2023, in cinemas.

The movie follows five brothers: Jide Kene Achufusi as Emeka Judah, Timini Egbuson as Pere Judah, Uzee Usman as Adamu Judah, Tobi Makinde as Shina Judah, and Olumide Oworu as Ejiro Judah, who must unite to rob a company to save their mother, played by Akindele as Jedidah Judah.
