In a chat with the Head of School, Mothercare Montessori School (Egbeda), Mr Jaiyesimi Omotayo, during the school’s maiden classic chess competition recently, Mr Jaiyesimi reiterated that the school is committed to training young children not only in education, but on extracurricular activities that will ensure that they acquire skills that will enable them to compete favourably with their peers in the society.
Mr Jaiyesimi mentioned that the school is involved in extracurricular activities like chess, science project, robotics education, character count program that is designed to equip them with viable societal morals, among other activities.
He also affirmed that although this is the maiden edition of the school’s chess competition, Mothercare Montessori Schools have been participating in other schools and they’ve been doing favourably well.
AlimoshoToday also had a chat with the Chairman/Proprietor of Mothercare Montessori Schools, Mr Odunayo Kuponuyi, who averred that the school, which has been in existence for 15 years and 10 years in Egbeda and Okerube respectively, is committed to providing young children with a solid educational foundation through a technological approach to education delivery.
In his words; “The school’s vision is to lay a solid foundation for these young ones so that wherever they find themselves in future, they could excel.
"What we see in the educational sector is that the basic foundation for most of these children is not solid and we want to cash in on that; we are going digital (technology) full blast.
“About 4-5 years back we started with laptops for our Grade 3-5 students in both locations, now we are going into the digital age of delivering services by the provision of interactive boards and projectors for the classes and equipping all our teachers with personal laptops.
“We want to ensure that all our teachers are well equipped and tech-savvy in terms of delivery in the classroom.”
While speaking about the school’s choice of playing chess as a form of an extracurricular activity, Mr Kuponuyi said; “Chess is only one out of the other activities we are doing as part of extracurricular activities for the school and we chose chess because it is more of a challenge to our children, particularly the growing ones, they run away from Mathematics.
"Also, chess is one of the most tasking exercises that these children could learn early enough so they will grasp the basic principle of Mathematics that will propel them into real thinking and delivery in whatever they want to do.”
Mothercare Montessori School (Egbeda) is equipped with a playground for the kids, a functional library, a state-of-the-art computer room, and a wall in each classroom dedicated to showcasing students’ projects.
